चंद्रयान 3 मोहिमेत सहभागी असलेल्या तनुजा या नांदेडमधील सायन्स महाविद्यालयाचे माजी प्राचार्य कालिदास देशपांडे यांची कन्या आहेत. त्यांचे बालपण नांदेडमधील विद्यानगर येथे गेले आहे. पहिली ते दहावी पर्यंतच शिक्षण पीपल्स हायस्कुल मध्ये झाले. त्यानंतर विज्ञान शाखेची निवड करुन महाविद्यालयामध्ये प्रवेश मिळवला. त्यांचे वडिल कालिदास देशपांडे हे वनस्पतीशास्त्र विषयातील प्राध्यापक, शास्त्रज्ञ होते. त्यामुळे तनुजा यांना त्यांच्या घरातूनच शास्रज्ञ होण्याचं बाळकडू मिळालं. तर तनुजा यांच्या आई देखील विज्ञान महाविद्यालयामध्ये प्राध्यापक होत्या. घरी शैक्षणिक वारसा असल्याने तनुजाच्या हुशारीसाठी पोषक वातावरण तयार झालं.

तनुजा यांनी  श्री गुरुगोबिंदसिंग जी इंजिनियअरिंग महाविद्यालयामधून  बी टेक आणि एम टेकची पदवी प्राप्त केली. लहानपणापासून तनुजा या अभ्यासामध्ये खूप हुशार होत्या. त्यांच्या पालकांनी देखील हुशार मुलांच्या अनेक पिढ्या घडविल्या आहेत. पंरतु त्यांच्या वडिलांचे 2000 साली निवृत्तीनंतर दोन महिन्यांतच निधन झाले आणि तनुजा या वडिलांच्या मायेला पारख्या झाल्या.  पण तराही त्यांनी त्यांच्या शिक्षणाचा ध्यास सोडला नाही. अवघ्या दोनच वर्षात म्हणजे 2002 साली त्यांच्या आईचे देखील निधन झाले आणि आईची सावली देखील त्यांच्यापासून दूर गेली.

शिक्षण पूर्ण झाल्यावर तनुजा यांचा विवाह पुण्यातील  अभिजीत पत्की यांच्याशी झाला. ते सध्या बंगळूरुमधील एका कंपनीमध्ये कार्यरत आहेत. तनुजा यांना शास्त्रज्ञ होण्याची इच्छा लहानपणापासून होती. त्यासाठी त्यांनी अथक परिश्रम आणि मेहनत घेऊन इस्रोपर्यंतचा टप्पा गाठला. शास्रज्ञ होऊन इस्रोमध्ये काम करण्याची तनुजा यांचं स्वप्न होतं. जे त्यांनी पूर्ण देखील केलं. चांद्रयान मोहिमेमध्ये ज्या अनेक शास्रज्ञांनी काम केलं त्यांच्या यादीमध्ये तनुजा यांचा समावेश आहे.

चांद्रयान मोहिमेचं नेतृत्व जरी पुरुषांनी केलं असलं तरीही पडद्यामागे अनेक महिला शास्रज्ञांनी देखील हातभार लावला आहे. जवळपास 54 महिलांचा या मोहिमेमध्ये सहभाग होता. त्यांच्या या कार्याला संपूर्ण देशाला कायमच अभिमान वाटत राहिल.
